Medical Aid in Dying
Since 2015, medical assistance in dying (MAID) has allowed Quebecers to choose a death without suffering and with dignity. At La Maison de Sérénité, we offer respectful and compassionate support for those considering this option.
About
What is medical
aid in dying?
Medical aid in dying (MAID) is defined as "care consisting of administering medications or substances by a physician to a person, at the person's request, to relieve the person's suffering by causing the person's death."
MAID has been legal in Quebec since December 2015. The end-of-life criterion initially set out in the Act has only been applied since March 12, 2020. In March 2021, the federal government abolished the “reasonably foreseeable natural death” criterion to be entitled to medical assistance in dying. See legislative information on the Quebec government website.

Medical aid in dying
at La Maison de la Sérénité
Following the adoption by the Quebec National Assembly on June 9, 2023, of Bill 11 concerning end-of-life care in palliative care hospices, medical aid in dying is available at La Maison de la Sérénité and is solely administered by our medical team.
This will meet the needs of our community while respecting the quality of care offered at La Maison and its mission. To be eligible for medical assistance in dying, a person must meet all the criteria set by the Quebec government. This decision aligns with our values of respecting patients’ choices, making their last days serene, and providing the best possible care in a quiet and welcoming environment.
Services
Continuous palliative sedation
The administration of continuous palliative sedation is governed by the Act respecting end-of-life care in Quebec.
La Maison offers this care, administered to relieve intolerable and intractable suffering. All steps in the process are declared in compliance with the Ministry’s requirements. Ongoing work is being carried out to develop nursing leadership in the clinical assessment of patients using palliative sedation monitoring tools.

Visiting Hours
Visitors of all ages are always allowed. There is no limit to the number of visitors unless restricted by current regulations. It is up to the patient to set that limit per their wishes.
However, visitors must respect the patient’s needs and not disturb the residents. For security reasons, visitors are required to sign in and out.
