Our history
1999
In 1999, a small group of people, aware of the humanization of end-of-life care, obtained letters patent for a non-profit organization (NPO) with the goal of establishing a palliative care home in Laval. Before undertaking various fundraising efforts, the project promoters conducted a needs analysis demonstrating the relevance of such a home in the Laval region. Then, the board members visited other palliative care homes to validate the feasibility and viability of the project.
2004
In 2004, the small group expanded and sought new support from influential people in the business community. A director was hired to promote the project and obtain financial support from governments, the municipality, public and private organizations in the region, and the population. In September of the same year, the fundraising campaign was launched to raise funds for the construction of the house and its operation for the first year.
2006
In June 2006, thanks to the generosity of our four major donors, the founding members acquired a beautiful piece of land along the Rivière des Prairies. The groundbreaking took place in the summer of 2008, with construction spanning the following year. Like a dream that took ten years to materialize, La Maison finally opened its doors to the public in the fall of 2009, welcoming its first patient on January 16, 2010.
2015
On September 21, 2015, La Maison celebrated its 5th anniversary. La Maison is proud of the remarkable journey it has taken since its opening. However, its sustainability and ability to continue providing free care and services depend on the solidarity of all those involved in this deeply human cause, as well as on the financial contributions and generosity of its donors.
2020
On February 6, 2020, during the Intemporelle Benefit Evening, the board of directors announced that the Maison de Soins Palliatifs de Laval would change its name to La Maison de la Sérénité. This decision was not made lightly. La Maison listens to those around it and wants this new name to evoke a sense of belonging for everyone. Our major donors wanted to give La Maison a more symbolic name that reflects the advances in end-of-life care made over the past ten years. La Maison de la Sérénité represents a place of peace and calm, ensuring a state of well-being for patients and families for an indefinite period.
2025
On January 16, 2025, La Maison will celebrate the 15th anniversary of the admission of its first patient. Since then, more than 3300 patients have benefitted from our services.
Symbolic
Emblem of La Maison: the Ginkgo Biloba tree
The Ginkgo biloba
The Ginkgo biloba is a true living fossil, with ancestors that populated Jurassic forests some 200 million years ago. The leaves and seeds are used in phytotherapy, and it is remarkably resistant to air pollution and insects. A ginkgo even survived the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and all the climatic upheavals on our planet. Since then, the Japanese consider this tree a symbol of hope. It is also called the "tree of forty shields."
Origin of the name
The name "tree of forty shields" comes from the fact that in 1780, a French botanist named Pétigny bought 5 Ginkgo plants from an English nurseryman for the considerable sum of 200 pounds, or 40 gold écus.
Why choose
this tree as an emblem?
Because its leaves are heart-shaped (a symbol of love and hope) and it has great longevity (can live for over a thousand years). The first Ginkgo biloba was planted on September 21, 2015, during the 5th anniversary of La Maison.
